Character: Julius Will Kresnik
Canon: Tales of Xillia 2 (after building the bridge to Canaan), Forgotten Tales CRAU
Age: 28
Background Information:
To introduce Julius, we have to start with his family. Julius is one of many in a long line of descendants of Kresnik the Genesis Sage. For Reasons, their bloodline has become involved in Origin's Trial, a test to decide the worthiness of humanity, and setup by the spirits Origin, Maxwell and Chronos. They have been bestowed a power called Chromatus, a transformational ability that allows them to visit and destroy Fractured Dimensions, universes that have split off from their own. Not every Kresnik has the ability, nor to the same extent. Those who are born with it have a pocketwatch that enables this transformation. It sets them as part of this puzzle - a competition with a deadline, and this family has poured themselves into solving the riddle and making it to the Land of Canaan for the sake of all of humanity.
It's... complicated. And a bit messy.
Julius was born the son of Bisley Karcsi Bakur and Cornelia Wi Kresnik. We don't know a ton about his early life. We know he lived with his family, and other family worked for them (his aunt, for example, who he remembers fondly) he was 8 years old when she died, fighting against Chronos.
It's not until he's 11 that he manages to destroy his first fractured dimension, which is a pretty big accomplishment. When he's 13, he stumbles upon his mother's sister, Claudia... who thinks he's one of his father's men, coming for her son, who also has the power of Chromatus... well, it ends badly, to say the least, with Julius killing her when she attacks him. Well shit.
It's at this point that Julius learns the truth about his family, the limits of his own power, and that he's likely just another pawn in his father's goal to reach Canaan. So Julius takes his brother (who is also his cousin, because this can't get complicated enough), Ludger, in, seeing an opportunity. After all, Ludger has a pocket watch too, and well, there was only so much Julius could do with his level of skill... and he decided to make Ludger his secret weapon, and hid him from his father. This is when Julius Wi Bakur became Julius Will Kresnik. He takes a job at Spirius to help support Ludger, continuing to keep the boy a secret and using his watch to help power himself up.
About his time at Spirius - this was when he first met and worked with Rideaux, and entered into something of a competition with the other man. They both knew that they were cogs in the clockwork of Spirius and that one of them would end up dying to get Bisley to Canaan. Their competition was basically to see who wouldn't lose that battle. But also, this is when Julius really threw himself into destroying dimensions, truly considering himself a complete piece of shit for it, and hating what he was doing... but he had nothing else. This was all he was good for.
Regarding Ludger - Julius didn't hate his brother or treat him like shit, but Julius wasn't a good person, filled with a lot of self-hatred about who he was and what he was doing, how many people he'd killed. But it was through the evolution of his relationship with Ludger that Julius became aware that he was at least... worthy of being cared about by someone, and once that realization hit, Julius swore he would protect Ludger, and keep him out of all of this Kresnik bullshit, and became a much more doting brother than he was before. Ludger was no longer (just) a tool, but one of his dearest people.
During the game we see Julius doing whatever he can to shelter Ludger from the Curse of the Kresniks and to keep him away from Bisley Bakur. This includes rigging his Spirius entrance exam to fail, throwing himself between his brother and Chronos during a battle, or just telling him to give up his newfound role with Spirius and finding the Waymarkers to get to Canaan. It's not until he sees the importance of Elle to his brother that he starts to realize that Ludger has someone he wants to take care of as well, and that, maybe, just maybe, Ludger is more capable of the task of breaking the curse than he could ever be.
When he finally lets go, and offers himself as a potential sacrifice to become the soul bridge to Canaan, it's like Julius is finally acknowledging his brother has grown up and he's willing to be the stepping stone instead of the one doing the stepping.
In terms of his CRAU from Forgotten Tales - there's not a ton, but what's there will make him a bit more ready to adjust, which is important to him, rather than him starting off from a pit of angst (there will still be angst). A bit more used to the whole being dead thing, starting to learn how to rely on others instead of being so concerned about holding his own. Also being a cat lady.
Personality: Julius is the following in the order of importance: 1. big bro 2. huge piece of shit. The end.
Okay, not really the end. Julius sees himself as Ludger's big brother, first and foremost. Julius was in a very bad place when he met Ludger, and his brother was one of the first and only people who started to care for him, notice that he wasn't doing well and wanted to do things for him. This helped to shift his outlook and Julius realized that there was one person in the world he could protect, this became his driving force. He dotes on Ludger, but also doesn't hesitate to tease him and give him shit like any good big brother.
However, in his efforts to protect, he also is a consummate liar, keeping so many truths away from his brother in an effort to save him from the world only Julius knows. He doesn't want Ludger to get caught up in the Kresnik family bullshit. He goes as far as sabotaging Ludger's entrance exam into the Spirius corporation. He hides the fact that he's actively dying from being turned into a divergence catalyst, which is the cause of the fractured dimensions, and only admits it to Ludger when more or less on his deathbed. He will go to almost any length to try to spare Ludger pain (and he knows he's extremely selfish for it.)
Ludger's friends, and people in general, he'll treat them with decent courtesy. He puts up a good act as a normal person, and most people don't realize he's a walking trainwreck. He doesn't clean, absolutely cannot cook...
For people who know what Julius does for a living, who interact with him as part of his work or self-imposed mission of protecting Ludger, or who know about Spirius, the Kresniks or Fractured Dimensions? Well. Julius doesn't sugarcoat most things, and he's a lot more business. He's brusque and more than a little blunt - he knows he's a bad person, and hates himself appropriately. His caring about Ludger is his attempt to make amends but he definitely doesn't think it is enough to fix all of his sins, so to speak. Even during the game, he is ruthless and cold about his role and all the killing he does. It's just the way it is. He knows he is selfish and he knows he's guilty as all hell for doing what he's done. He doesn't try to play that off.
Generally though - Julius does a good job of pretending to be a normal person, but there's a lot of self-hatred underneath that surface, and a lot of lies and pretend.
Abilities & Inventory:
Julius is one of Milla Kresnik's descendants and as part of that family, has the ability to transform into a Chromatus form with the help of the pocket watch he was born with.. This is basically like shell, or rock that merges in with the skin that allows them to transport into fractured dimensions and adds some boosted and timey-wimey related fight abilities. There's usually up to 4 levels of transformation and generally, Julius only could get the first two, using the third on rare occasions with the power of Ludger's pocket watch. That said, Julius will not have access to that in game because of his current status as dead, and also because he no longer has a watch of his own.
He will still be able to fight in his dual bladed style. His artes are listed here (https://aselia.fandom.com/wiki/ToX2_-_Julius_Will_Kresnik:_Artes)
His dreamotion abilities will initially manifest themselves similar to his chromatus, mostly because that's what he's used to, and he is a very defensive character.
Inventory-wise he's basically got nothing except the clothes on his back.
Suitability & Plans: This is about generating CR and pushing Julius out of his shell and having him learn to rely on people more. Trying to get him out of his own head and have him expose his own weaknesses to other people. He had a very bad childhood, and was extremely insular with his true feelings and I want him to try to move past that. I also feel like the concept of the dreamscapes is very much in line with Fractured Dimensions as shown in Tales of Xillia 2 and Julius will feel a bit useful in them, which will help him a lot.
